As social workers, our writing doesn’t stop at progress notes.
We write emails, assessments, policies, court reports, advocacy letters, grant proposals, and even social media posts—each carrying ethical weight.
The NASW Code of Ethics guides us in all forms of communication, reminding us to uphold integrity, cultural humility, client dignity, and transparency.
✨ Questions worth asking:
• Is my writing clear, respectful, and free from bias?
• Am I protecting confidentiality while sharing what’s needed?
• Does my language reflect social work values?
Ethical writing is a professional skill—and a reflection of our commitment to clients, communities, and colleagues.
If you’re unsure how to apply the Code to your writing beyond documentation, I offer Ethics Clarity Consultations to help you navigate the gray areas with confidence.
